The Meaning of the Authentic Dutch Band

The traditional band is one of the most recognisable decorations found on Dutch wooden shoes. According to an old Dutch tradition, the band represents an open Bible viewed from above. The three crosses also resemble the famous symbol found in the coat of arms of Amsterdam.

Historically, the three crosses were associated with the greatest threats faced by society during the 15th and 16th centuries: water, fire and the plague. Wearing wooden shoes with this authentic band was believed to offer protection against these dangers.
